Hi,
Why is it that the nonlinear Poisson solver works best with a PIC ion distribution and Maxwellian electron distribution? I think it may have something to do with the Poisson equation becoming nonlinear for a Maxwellian electron distribution… Is there any supplementary references I may see to understand the relation/limitation between particle distributions and the Poisson solver?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Robert

Hi,
You are right. Maxwell eq becomes non linear with maxwellian electron. In this case, SPIS can use an implicit method instead of explicit. Much more stable even for mesh grids larger than Debye length.
